In the run up to Guy Fawkes Night, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service are warning the community of the devastating consequences of using illegal fireworks.
The Service strongly urges people to visit an organised display wherever possible and enjoy a fun yet safe bonfire night. In conjunction with the Durham Safety Advisory Group and Trading Standards, the Fire Service recently delivered a safety session for firework event organisers in the county. This session helps ensure that event organisers understand the safety considerations that need to be put in place to help ensure a successful display.
A concern for the Fire Service is that Durham County Council Trading Standards department recently seized a large quantity of illegal fireworks, that when tested were shown to be capable of causing severe injury.
Lee Aspery, the Services Fire Investigation Manager, said “It is essential that residents of County Durham and Darlington are made aware of the potentially dangerous and life altering effects that fireworks can have when they are used inappropriately. These dangers are severely magnified when using counterfeit or illegal fireworks”.
Illegal fireworks are manufactured from poor quality materials that can cause traumatic injuries to users. It is important that any fireworks that are purchased have the BS 7114 mark on them and they are used in appropriate settings following the accompanying guidance.
A joint Police – Fire Service Fireworks Display is to be held at Aykley Heads, Durham on 5th November. Gates open at 5pm with bonfire lit at 7.15pm and fireworks display at 7.30pm.
