General Safety GuidanceBarbecue Safety
B Barbecues should be in good working order, positioned out of the wind on level ground away from fences, trees, sheds or anything else that may catch fire. A Always remain with your barbecue once lit. Keep in mind cooking and excessive alcohol do not mix, alcohol is flammable and can impair your judgement! R Remember use only proper firelighters or fluid. Never pour flammable liquids onto coals after the fire has been lit. Be patient and ventilate the coals to aid burning. B Barbecues should not be moved once lit. Never place indoors. E Ensure doors and windows nearby are kept closed to prevent burning particles from being blown into the house. C Consider children and dogs running around the barbecue, create a safety zone! U Utensils used for cooking should have long handles. Take care not to wear long sleeves or loose clothing that could catch fire. E Ensure that a bucket of water, appropriate extinguisher or a bucket of sand is kept near by and that the barbecue is left to cool safely. Back to General Fire Safety Guidance Top of Page |
