Emergency Lighting
Purpose of Emergency Lighting
- To enable people to find their way to safety in the absence of normal lighting.
- To indicate clearly and unambiguously the escape route.
- To facilitate safe movement to and through the exits.
- To illuminate fire alarm call points and fire-fighting/first aid equipment.
Requirement for Emergency Lighting
- Places of public assembly.
- All sleeping risks.
- All those premises used at night.
- All areas devoid of natural light.
Types of System
- Self contained units, (all equipment contained within one housing).
- Central Battery Powered.
- Emergency Generator Powered.
- For smaller premises a substantial handlamp may be suitable.

Types of Operation
- Maintained Operation - types of system where the bulbs are illuminated at all times.
- Non-Maintained Operation - systems where the bulbs are illuminated only when the power to the premises fails.
Application of Operation
- Maintained Operation - Pubs, clubs, larger sleeping risks (including residential homes).
- Non-Maintained Operation - Offices, factories, smaller homes.
Siting of Critical Luminaries

- Adjacent to each exit door / emergency exit.
