Entry Requirements

Health
An applicant must satisfy a qualified Occupational Health Physician at a medical examination that he/she is:
  • Fit to undertake firefighting duties - a full medical examination is carried out and medical records sought. A decision will be made by the Occupational Health Physician, if a history of the following conditions have been diagnosed :
  • A history of contact dermatitis or psoriasis;
  • A history of hypertension, diabetes, epilepsy, cardiac or circulatory disease;
  • Significant joint injury or disease with special references to back and knees;
  • Suffer from vertigo, claustrophobia or acrophobia; and
  • Suffer from any chronic respiratory problem e.g. asthma.
Applicants should have:
  • A satisfactory lung function, assessed by the measurement of the forced expiratory volume in one second and the forced vital capacity; and
  • A high standard of physical fitness, strength and stamina.

Medical records may be required from General Practitioners in the screening process. Consent will be sought at the appropriate time. Applicants may be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing at the medical stage. It will be a matter for the Fire Authority's Occupational Health Physician to consider whether any physical or mental impairment is incompatible with the duties of a firefighter.
Eye Test

Eyesight
  • Has good eyesight and normal colour perception. The Occupational Health Physician will consider whether any eye sight condition is incompatible with the duties of a firefighter.
  • Eyesight will be tested thoroughly by a separate eyesight examination undertaken by a qualified optometrist.
  • Candidates are required to meet the current national standard for appointment to the position of firefighter.
  • Applicants who are doubtful about their eyesight are advised to consider having this checked before applying but please note the Fire Authority will not be responsible for the cost of tests arranged privately.
Hearing
  • Has good unaided hearing - hearing will be tested.
Age
Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of appointment, and be no older than 55 years of age. The date of birth is verified as part of the process.

Work Permit
As an employer, the Fire Authority is subject to the provisions of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996. It could be guilty of committing a criminal offence if it employed someone who does not have permission to be in or work in the United Kingdom. The Fire Authority reserve the right therefore to request relevant documentation from all those offered employment to satisfy its obligations in this respect.

HM Forces
If you are liable to be called as a reservist in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces, you will be required to provide an exemption certificate.
