Job Purpose
To protect and save people and property from fire and other hazards in the most competent and effective manner to the highest possible standards of care and quality.

Watch Manager

Context of the Role

  • County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service work towards protecting life and property and providing a quality fire safety service.
  • Station based personnel form a large part of the service delivery department providing the majority of front line services to the public upon which the performance of the Service is judged. The quality of these services provided to the community is dependant upon station personnel being effectively trained and developed.
  • The highest standard of communication and conduct is expected from all staff. Respect for confidentiality is essential.
  • All staff are expected to participate positively in the training and development review process, to undertake relevant training and development activities to improve their work performance, and to contribute to the training and development of others.
  • To promote the policy of equality and fairness, both internally and externally in order to demonstrate commitment to anti discriminatory practice.
  • To practice and promote the health and safety policies. To contribute to the development and progression of health and safety within the sphere of responsibility of this role for all employees and service recipients.
  • The areas of responsibility associated with a particular post may be amended from time to time and where possible, consultation will take place prior to the change. It is expected that the postholder will operate flexibly within the role, and undertake any other tasks and projects, which could reasonably be expected of someone holding this role.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
  1. To respond immediately and safely to all emergency calls and requests for assistance when rostered for duty within the contracted availability, which includes weekends and public holidays.
  2. To deal with emergencies as directed and work effectively and efficiently as a member of a disciplined team.
  3. To liase and communicate with other emergency personnel at incidents.
  4. To establish and maintain the confidence of members of the public and maintain links with the community.
  5. To give general fire safety advice and guidance to people when requested.
  6. To work to help educate members of the community in the risks and hazards of fire.
  7. To ensure personal safety and that of others at all times.
  8. To keep a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to carry out all the duties of a firefighter.
  9. To maintain personal appearance, hygiene and cleanliness of uniform in keeping with a disciplined service.
  10. To maintain all firefighting and emergency equipment in a state of readiness including cleaning, repairing and testing as required and to approved standards and procedures.
  11. To check firefighting resources provided for fire service use including hydrants and fixed installations.
  12. To know the local streets, roads and buildings situated around the fire station area.
  13. To be aware of the risks, possible hazards and water supplies to be found within the fire station area.
  14. To complete basic paperwork and routine administration including recording of information.
  15. To keep records up to date as necessary.
  16. To take part in a continuous training programme by attending lectures, exercises, practice drill sessions and other forms of training to maintain competence levels.
