Conditions of Service

Hours of Duty
On average you will be called out two or three times a week for a couple of hours. If you cannot be available all the time, that's not a problem. You can be paid for being ‘on call’ for only part of the day or week. There is a particular shortage of people who are available during midweek working hours, so you could have evenings or weekends free if you need to, and still do a valuable and worthwhile job. If you really can’t be on call - for example because of a holiday or a deadline at work - you can ‘sign off’.

Place of Work
You must live or work within five minutes of your Local Fire Station, as you are required to report to the station within five minutes of receiving a call for duty.

Holidays
You are entitled to four weeks’ paid annual leave in any one calendar year. After five years service this will rise at the commencement of the following leave year to five weeks’ paid annual leave.

Superannuation
You will not be a full member of the Firefighter’s Pension Scheme - you do not pay membership contributions, nor do you have access to the full range of personal and death benefits which the scheme offersDatabase 'DDFRA USP', View 'Admin\All pages', Document 'Main Conditions of Service' wholetime firefighters. Nevertheless, you are covered by certain provisions of the scheme if you become permanently disabled or die as a result of an injury received in the course of your firefighting duties.

Sickness
You are entitled to paid sick leave, subject to National Joint Council of Service conditions.

Probation
From the date of your appointment you will be subject to two years probation.

Training
Effective and regular training is essential for proper performance of duties.

Uniform
Uniform is provided and must be worn while you are on duty.

Hair/Make-Up/Jewellery
Hair must not impair the gas tightness of breathing apparatus nor must it impair vision or hearing. Hair should be worn so as not to present a health and safety hazard. The use of make-up or hair preparations such as gel or hair spray is not allowed while you are on duty neither is the wearing or rings, watches, bracelets or earrings for reasons of health and safety. These requirements apply equally to male and female staff.
