History and Background
The Fire Station at Stanhope, which was built in 1966, covers a distance of 35 kilometres of the Wear Valley from Wolsingham to Kilhope Moor and is staffed by a retained crew from the local community. The Station area comprises mainly of small towns and villages including Wolsingham, Frosterley, Eastgate, Westgate and Cowshill and other agricultural rural areas. The market town of Stanhope is regarded as the capital of Weardale and a thriving tourist industry exists with numerous guest houses and homes offering bed and breakfast accommodation.
Weardale was formerly a lead mining community and the remains of this industry can be seen throughout the Valley. Numerous abandoned quarries exist posing potential hazards. The main A689 road is an arterial route to the Lake District and is subjected to heavy traffic especially during the holiday periods.
