History and Background
Durham Station, which forms part of the Fire Service Headquarters complex, was opened in 1958. The Station is located on the northern boundary of the City. The operational provision at headquarters has been extended over the years with the provision of specialist appliances resulting in an increase in establishment and buildings to accommodate both personnel and vehicles.

The Station provides initial attendance to the City of Durham, which has a number of major historical buildings including the Cathedral and Castle. The area is now typical of other areas within the County that have suffered because of the decline of the coal industry, however, a number of industrial estates have been built which provide substantial employment.

Durham is one of the UK's principle seats of learning and comprises of several colleges which are sited at various locations within the City. Student accommodation includes older multi-storey housing and purpose built halls of residence. Therefore, the University presents Durham Station with a potential risk in excess of that which would at first be apparent for the size of the City.
