Command, Control & Communications

FiReControl
Currently there are 46 fire control rooms in England, based at local fire and rescue services.

The FiReControl project is working to move from the existing system of control rooms into 9 new amalgamated Regional Control Centres - with a Regional Control Centre serving the north-east from Durham - to find out more visit the FiReControl project website.

Firelink
Firelink is major project to procure and implement of a National Wide Area Radio system for the fire and rescue service.

Find out more - visit the Firelink website.

The Function of the Control Room
The Control Room is the nerve centre of our Fire Service. It is responsible for co-ordinating resources, (appliances, equipment and personnel) and ensuring that those resources are evenly spread-out throughout the organisation.

It's primary function is to respond to an emergency call with speed and efficiency and to despatch the nearest appliances to the address received from the caller.

The Control Room is specially designed and equipped with communications and control facilities that enable the staff to very speedily operate the call-out system to all Fire Stations throughout the Service and transmit the appropriate turn-out instructions.

Role of an Energency Fire Control Officer
The primary role of the Emergency Fire Control Operator is to be able to deal with emergency calls in an efficient, responsible manner and to mobilise the nearest appliances to incidents.

The Control is the first point of contact with the general public and it is therefore essential that the operator is self disciplined enough to reassure a distraught caller and offer fire survival advice when required.
